Geostream UK appointed to remediate former British Vita factory site, Salford

Kellen Homes has appointed Geostream UK to carry out complex remediation works on a former coated fabrics factory site, ready for the creation of 168 new homes.

The 5.3-acre site was once home to British Vita, a polymer manufacturer, but has been derelict since 2009.

Previous industrial use left behind extensive TPH-contaminated soil and groundwater, including Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (LNAPL).

Geostream UK is carrying out a 20-week programme of remediation, removing LNAPL from groundwater before beginning treatment of dissolved phase contamination.

Our team is using a groundwater treatment system specially designed by Geostream Group in Italy. The system employs 5-6 Total Fluid Pumps, which are drawing water and oils from installed wells and sumps, penetrating the saturated zone across the site. The treatment plant is taking water from dewatered excavations, and removing the LNAPL.

Meanwhile, excavated soils are being treated on site by bioremediation and stabilisation so they can be reused in the development.

Once LNAPL has been removed, our team will remediate contamination below the water table by In-Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO) using Oxygen Biochem Plus (OBC+) from Carus Corporation.

Geostream UK is scheduled to hand over the site for development by winter 2023.
